Love Tour Note: Report from HQ

Guess it's about time for an update! Gene has been doing the 9-to-5 routine at Treasury Board since August, while I've been working on a verbatim theatre piece about the Eye for Love Tour. Sigh. So much fantastic material that I realized I couldn't do it justice in a play. So-o-o the project has now morphed into a documentary film project.

To push me along my learning curve for this task, I've just completed an online course in "Writing the Documentary Film." And I now have a pre-script outline to guide my writing. Still lots of work ahead, but it's exciting! The goal is to write the most detailed script possible so that the superb video technician I've got lined up will have a smooth time putting it al together for us.

Stay tuned!

Love Tour Note: Reuniting a family

"Family" has a very broad meaning for Piet and Ina Visser, of Medicine Hat, Alberta. Their large extended family also embraces musicians from across Canada, and friends from around the world. Piet shared a beautiful story of how he and Ina helped reunite alienated members of a Korean family, folks who were initially strangers to the Vissers--but are now part of the Visser clan.
I don't have a photo of Piet to show you because, right after his interview, he had to rush off to drive a Mexican friend to Calgary airport. But here's Piet's story. Click here to watch.

Happy to report that all our video interviews have now been transcribed! So we're working on the script for a verbatim theatre piece. It's fun, inspiring--and a lot of work. So far we've done a scene on loss, and are working on a very long scene on family.

Meanwhile, I want to keep sharing little video nuggets with you, like part of our interview with Sara and Joanna in Vancouver. Click here to watch.

We had a lot fun interviewing Adele Bai and John Li, in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Among other things, the couple spoke about whether you need to be happy to experience love. Or not.

We're almost finished with the transcription of our video interviews (phew!). I wanted to share with you the interview we did with Sheryl St Gelais, who had some very moving stories about loving the "unlovable." Click here to see an excerpt.

We interviewed Fred Schubert in Ottawa last month.
It's amazing how many people we interviewed talked about their grandmothers as their earliest source of unconditional love. Seems your grandma could see right into your heart--and even protect you the way no one else could.

Here is Fred Schubert's story about his phenomenal grandmother. Click here for the interview. Also listen to Fred's musical tribute to his grandma.

I'm still editing our Love Tour videos for transcription. Here is an interview we did in Spanish, Ontario, with Betty Townshend, who is part of our extended Ojibwe family. Betty shared with us how important it is to love, even when you've been hurt. Click here for the interview.

I want to share with you the interview we did with world traveller (not to mention, accomplished photographer!) Steve Todd in Winnipeg last month. Steve was also our house guest earlier this month. His travels in 137 countries over the course of 12 years have given him some unique insights. Click here to see the interview.

I was excited to interview Cindy Fichault, whose tattoos express various dimensions of her love. Cindy is the desk clerk at a hotel in Dryden, Ontario.

Jessica Hewison, of Cranbrook, BC
I was surprised and delighted when 17-year-old Jessica Hewison invited me to sit next to her on the eastbound Greyhound out of Calgary. She told me all about her passion for figure skating; in fact, she was on her way to Medicine Hat, Alberta, for a few intensive weeks with her skating coaches there. Click here for Jessica's delightful interview.
