Calgary still seems to be living up to its boom-town reputation--youthful, brash, with new neighbourhoods and skyscrapers shooting up. A pulsing energy. And wealth. But, just like any large city, poverty, people digging in public garbage cans.
It was harder than anywhere else we've been to get interviews. We spent the afternoon wandering the Stephen Avenue Mall, a bustling, open-air pedestrian walkway at the centre of the city. We managed to do five interviews: a homeless guy (who charged us $20 for the privilege of interviewing him), a chaplain to the homeless, a businessman, a street performer, and two servers from a wine bar. In the evening, our hostess's friend Marilyn Moore joined us for an interview.

The farther we go on this journey, the more surprised I am by the wisdom people are concealing just below the surface. And I'm very moved that they are willing to share it--what a gift!
